Uncovering a history buried by different nationalist narratives (Jewish, Israeli, Arab and Palestinian) this book looks at how the late Ottoman era set the stage for the on-going Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It presents an innovative analysis of the struggle in its first years, when Palestine was still an integral part of the Ottoman Empire. The study of the Arabs in mandatory Palestine has long suffered from a preoccupation with elites that has produced a static, one-dimensional image of the Palestinian community. This emphasis has grown out of a primary interest in Palestinian nationalism and has sought justification in the structure of Arab politics and society under the Mandate.
